The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Isn’t the Z Fold 7’s Successor — Here’s What Samsung Actually Changed

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 reaches general retail availability on August 7, 2026. What makes it unusual is its proportions. Previous Z Fold models were tall and narrow when closed and opened into a nearly square screen. The Z Fold 8 is shorter and wider closed, and opens into a 4:3 panel shaped more like a small landscape tablet.

Samsung also split its foldable line in two this year. There is now a wide model and a tall model, sold side by side, and the Z Fold 8 is the wide one.

Not a Z Fold 7 successor — a new category

Here’s the detail that’s easy to miss if you’re not tracking Samsung’s foldable line closely: the Z Fold 8 is not the direct replacement for the Z Fold 7. That job belongs to the separately announced Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which keeps the familiar tall-and-narrow shape and carries a 6.5-inch cover screen, 8.0-inch main display, 5,000mAh battery, and a 200MP wide camera with a 10MP telephoto. Samsung’s own FAQ puts it plainly: the Ultra is what the original Z Fold line became, and the Z Fold 8 name has been reassigned to the new shape.

The Z Fold 8 covered here sits alongside it as a separate product — shorter, wider, lighter at 201g against the Ultra’s 215g. Both phones were announced on the same day, July 22, 2026, at Samsung’s Unpacked event in London. The Z Fold 8 does not support S Pen.

Samsung’s newsroom release states that general availability starts August 7, 2026, with the Z Fold8 at $1,899.99 / €1,999.00 / £1,699.00 and the Z Fold8 Ultra at $2,099.99 / €2,199.00 / £1,899.00, both in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. The phones were announced at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, 2026, with pre-orders opening the same day.

Delivery estimates on Samsung’s own store

August 7 is the general availability date. It is not necessarily when an order arrives. Samsung’s own US store carries a notice on Galaxy Z Fold8 listings stating that, due to high demand, it is experiencing a delay in delivery on popular combinations. At time of writing the 256GB Lavender configuration on Samsung.com was showing a September delivery estimate rather than August 7.

What the camera system gives up

The Z Fold 8 uses a dual rear camera system — a 50MP Wide sensor at F1.8, paired with a 50MP Ultra Wide at F1.9. There is no dedicated telephoto lens — the Z Fold 8 Ultra is the model carrying that, along with a 200MP wide sensor. Both front cameras are 10MP, with the main-screen unit offering a 100-degree field of view for group shots. Samsung lists 2x optical quality zoom and up to 10x digital zoom.

Samsung lists 8K video capture from Wide to Ultra Wide, with its ProVisual Engine applying real-time visual noise reduction. Two software features come with it. My FanCam works on video already in your Gallery — Galaxy AI detects subjects, you pick one, and it re-crops the clip around them at your chosen aspect ratio — and Dual Recording, which captures from front and main cameras simultaneously in a split view.

Battery and charging

The 4,800mAh figure Samsung markets is a “typical” capacity — the company’s own footnote lists the rated capacity as 4,660mAh, tested under the IEC 61960 standard. Samsung claims up to 26 hours of video playback, measured in its own internal lab conditions on a pre-release unit at 720p resolution with default settings over LTE. Wangdoo has not independently verified this figure, and Samsung notes actual playback time varies by network, settings, file format, screen brightness and battery condition.

My Take — Mr Wangdoo

Reading Samsung’s own documentation, the thing that stands out to me is not any single number in the spec table. It is that Samsung kept both shapes rather than picking one. Running two form factors side by side means two sets of tooling, two supply chains and two marketing stories at once. Companies do not take on that cost casually.

The naming is going to confuse people, and I think Samsung knows it. The phone called Z Fold 8 is not the successor to the Z Fold 7. The Ultra is. Samsung explains this in its own FAQ, which tells you they anticipated the question, but anticipating a problem is not the same as solving it. Anyone upgrading from a Z Fold 7 who buys on the name alone will end up with a different-shaped phone than the one they had.

There is a lot I cannot tell you from documentation. How visible the crease is after six months, whether the hinge holds up, how the 4:3 screen actually reads in the hand rather than on paper — none of that appears in a spec sheet, and I have not handled the device. What the spec sheet does show is a smaller battery and one fewer rear lens than the Ultra, at $200 less for the base configuration. Whether that trade lands depends entirely on what someone does with a phone all day, which is not a question a specification table answers.
