After a few days with Apple’s latest flagship, the premium price tag feels harder to justify than ever

First Impressions: Build and Performance
Barry highlighted the build quality of the orange iPhone 17 Pro Max, noting that it feels slightly heavier than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which gives it a more solid feel in hand, though slightly slippery.
Battery Life: Barry reported that even while restoring a 48GB iCloud backup, the device lasted a full day without requiring a charge.

48MP Sensors: The phone features triple 48MP cameras, including a 4× telephoto lens. However, Barry found that achieving full 48MP output is inconsistent. Many photos defaulted to 12MP due to Apple’s pixel-binning algorithm, which adjusts resolution based on lighting and scene conditions.
Real-World Observations: Even in good daylight, photos from the telephoto and ultra-wide lenses sometimes produced 12MP images. Barry also noticed unexpected aspect ratio changes overnight, affecting image resolution.
Professional Perspective: Barry noted that a “Pro” device should allow full control over image resolution. The algorithmic restrictions frustrated professional workflows, as consistent 48MP output was not guaranteed.
Telephoto & Zoom: The 4× telephoto lens felt like a step back from the 5× telephoto on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The 8× zoom is a digital crop of the 4× sensor, producing good results but not true optical zoom.
Image Quality: When full resolution works as intended, images are sharp and excellent for social media or print. However, improvements over the iPhone 15 Pro Max were moderate rather than transformative.
Pricing Considerations
At €1,489, the iPhone 17 Pro Max represents a premium purchase. Barry suggested that the combination of incremental performance improvements and inconsistent camera behavior may make upgrading from recent iPhone models less compelling.
