How the Rail-Free System Actually Works

A conventional CNC router moves its cutting head along fixed metal rails, which is precise but means the size of the machine’s frame permanently defines the size of its workspace, larger workspaces require physically larger, heavier, more expensive frames. GORDIX is built to sidestep that constraint entirely. The Track Record Behind It

Muherz isn’t a first-time crowdfunding entrant. The company launched the original Cubiio laser engraver in 2017 and Cubiio 2 in 2020, both of which were widely reported as among the most-funded fabrication tools in Kickstarter’s history, and one campaign-tracking source cites roughly 8,000 prior orders fulfilled across those campaigns. On the independent side, design publication Core77 ran a straightforward news writeup of the launch without testing the unit themselves. Separately, one crowdfunding review aggregator states that MakeSomething, a woodworking YouTuber with a large subscriber following, tested a unit and reported a favourable impression after going in skeptical; that claim appears on a third-party campaign-tracking site rather than something Wangdoo could independently confirm by viewing primary footage at the time of writing, so it’s presented here as a reported claim, not a verified one.

What a Crowdfunding Listing Is, and Isn’t

GORDIX is a Kickstarter campaign, not a shipping retail product. Backing a crowdfunding campaign means pre-ordering a product that doesn’t exist in finished form yet, in exchange for a manufacturer’s stated intent to deliver it, typically with weaker consumer protections than buying a finished product through standard retail channels. The company states shipping is planned for September 2026. Whether that date holds, and whether the finished unit matches the specifications described on the campaign page, can’t be confirmed until backers actually receive units.

What It’s Not

It’s not a replacement for a rigid, professionally installed CNC machine in every respect. A fixed-gantry system, even a basic one, doesn’t depend on the flatness or rigidity of whatever surface a person happens to set up, since its frame defines the workspace directly. GORDIX’s accuracy is explicitly tied to surface and setup quality by the company’s own description, meaning results may vary more from one setup to the next than they would on a machine with a built-in rigid frame. It’s also not a complete system out of the box, a compatible trim router has to be sourced and purchased separately, adding to the real total cost beyond the campaign’s headline pricing.

Reading through the campaign materials and Core77’s coverage rather than having run the machine myself, the engineering idea behind GORDIX is genuinely interesting on its own terms: workspace size in a traditional CNC machine is dictated by the size of its frame, and replacing that frame with a belt system that reads the surface the user provides is a real way around that constraint, not just a marketing angle. Whether the execution holds up to the stated ±0.5mm accuracy figure across a range of real home setups is something no amount of campaign-page reading can confirm, that’s precisely the kind of claim that needs hands-on testing against a known reference to verify, and at the time of writing, units haven’t shipped.

The manufacturer’s prior fulfillment history with Cubiio is a genuinely relevant data point, a company that has shipped two prior large campaigns is a different proposition than a first-time crowdfunding entrant, but it’s evidence about the company’s track record, not a substitute for evaluating this specific, more mechanically complex product once real units are in real hands.
