Why the Proxmark5 Is a Big Deal

The original Proxmark3 was created by Jonathan Westhues in 2007 and published as open-source hardware. Over the following decade and a half it became the undisputed industry standard for RFID security analysis — used by penetration testers, red teams, access control researchers, and hardware hobbyists worldwide. The RDV4, refined by the RFID Research Group and their celebrated “Iceman” firmware fork, has been the peak of the platform since 2019.

But the Proxmark3 had long-standing gaps — no UHF support, no native wireless operation, no native Flipper Zero integration, and ageing processor and FPGA capacity that limited future development. The Proxmark5 closes all of them in a single platform.
